Mock Code Practice Sessions

Consider holding practice sessions for cardiac arrest training and experience in utilizing BLS training in an actual clinical situation. It is not something that many LTC staff have experience with, and they may benefit from a “mock code” from time to time. I have had several opportunities to run codes in LTC over the years, one recently. From my experience, many LTC staff are usually BLS trained but may not have experience in actually being involved in a code and do not know what to actually do. It’s always good to practice once in a while.

If your facility has a protocol to not perform Codes and rather call 911, this may not apply to you.

Legionellosis Review

Are you testing for Legionella in your facility?

Dementia and Antipsychotics

Antipsychotic use compared with non-use in adults with dementia was associated with increased risks of stroke, venous thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, heart failure, fracture, pneumonia, and acute kidney injury, but not ventricular arrhythmia. The range of adverse outcomes was wider than previously highlighted in regulatory alerts, with the highest risks soon after initiation of treatment.
